Autism
According
to NASOM, (National Autism Society of Malaysia) Autism is a complex
developmental disability that appears during the first three years of life due
to a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain.
It
is four more times prevalent in boys than girls.
Autism
shows no racial, ethnic, or social boundaries, and cuts across family income, lifestyle,
and educational levels.
Autism
and its associated behaviours have been estimated to occur in as many as 1 in
68 new-borns. Source: CDC Center for Disease Control US.
In
Malaysia, it means that an estimated 9000 children are born with autism every
year. As the population grows, this increase in autism amongst children also
increases.
Parents
in B40 social category (earning under 3000 Rgt per month (just below US800)
contribute to between 50 to 60 percent of these child autism cases and are
undergoing financial and emotional distress.
As
at 2021, NASOM states that all the NGOs in Malaysia providing EARLY
Intervention Programmes can only handle 1500 out of the 9000 cases.
There
is therefore a SEVERE GAP in early intervention programmes that needs to be
addressed.
Due
to financial reasons, B40 parents of autistic children cannot afford to send
their children for private special needs preschools. No government assistance
is provided at this level.
Government
autism schools start at Standard 1 when they are 7 years of age and there are
not enough of this schools in Malaysia. Many are privately funded and beyond
the financial reach of the B40 parents.
Cool
Amrit Therapy can be used for B40 Parents as well as other parents who are
looking for innovative or energetic methods to complement current autism
therapeutic practices.
Autism
– the Challenges
The
main issues for Autistic children after talking to parents in B40 can be
summarized as below:
Lack
of eye contact
Inability
to verbalise/speak
In
their own world; Introvert
Repetitive
behaviour
Sensitive
to environment – startled by noise
Temper
tantrums
Mood
Swings
Difficult
to get their attention
The conclusion is that these B40 children require a lot of support NOT available in the current framework

3-month trial consisting of 6 parents with 6 autistic children aged around 6
years was conducted.
